DWG DWS-12 · CUBING SYSTEM

Cubing system: the warehouse word for dimensioning

Logistics veterans say 'cubing' where newer teams say 'dimensioning'. Same act: capturing a shipment's volume — and, in a cubing and weighing system, its weight — so freight can be billed, planned and audited by measurement rather than declaration.

01Cubing, defined the way the floor uses it

To cube a shipment is to work out the space it occupies: length by width by height, the bounding box. Carriers cube freight because their vehicles and aircraft fill by volume before they weigh out; warehouses cube inbound freight to plan storage and verify charges; shippers cube outbound freight to predict and defend the bill. The word is older than the machines — cubing began with tape measures and lookup tables — and it survives because the commercial question has not changed: how much space does this shipment really take?

Modern cubing equipment is the DWS machine. Where a tape workflow produced a number a person wrote down, a vision dimensioner captures the bounding box automatically, weighs the shipment in the same act, and binds both to the barcode. The cubing system and the dimensioning system are the same answer described by two generations of the trade.

02Where cubing systems sit

Cubing points follow the money:

  • Outbound dock — cubing parcels and pallets before tender, so declared data equals measured data and carrier corrections dry up.
  • Inbound receiving — cubing supplier freight on arrival, verifying charges and feeding true volumes to storage planning.
  • 3PL billing stations — cubing as a revenue act: clients billed on measured volume and weight, with the record as the invoice's evidence.
  • Carrier and hub operations — cubing at induction for load planning, revenue protection and network data.
Equipment choice follows freight: parcels cube on the parcel range, pallets on the GS300 series, and vehicles with the GS400. The noun on the purchase order matters less than placing the capture where the freight still belongs to you.

03Cubing data and dimensional weight

Cubing output becomes commercially active when it converts to dimensional weight — volume divided by the carrier's divisor — and is compared with actual weight for billing. The dimensional weight guide explains the arithmetic and the divisor landscape, and the calculator lets you cube a shipment by hand right now: measure three sides, enter them, see the billable weight. A cubing system simply does that for every shipment, automatically, with the record kept.

One more place the vocabulary matters: tenders and audits. Carrier contracts, 3PL agreements and equipment RFPs written in cubing language and answered in dimensioning language (or the reverse) regularly talk past each other for a full clarification round. When we respond to a cubing specification, we map it line by line to the DWS configuration that satisfies it — send the document and the mapping comes back with the quotation.

FAQQuestions buyers ask

Is a cubing system different from a dimensioner?
Functionally they are the same equipment lineage: cubing is the trade's traditional term, dimensioning the current one. Goodscan equipment performs cubing and weighing with barcode capture — a DWS capture.
Do carriers still say cubing?
Yes — cubing and cube are everyday terms in LTL and warehousing, especially in North American operations. Specifications and RFPs use both vocabularies for the same machines.
Can a cubing system handle irregular freight?
Vision-based cubing measures the bounding box of the load as presented, including irregular shapes — the same box the carrier will assess. That is the standard the record is judged against.
